JOGLE Diary Day 10: Plymouth to Land's End (100 miles)

After a great breakfast of Cornflakes and Rice Krispies, despite Jon’s bemusement at my preference for Cornflakes over the crunchy nut variety, we paused briefly for supplies (white mice, wine gums, and cereal bars) at the local Sommerfield supermarket before making quick progress over the first seven miles of the day to the ferry port at Torpoint. The short ferry ride provided a nice break in the sunshine and gave Tom the opportunity to crack a few ferry jokes (not ferry funny ones!) before he nearly cracked a rib falling down the stairs from the upper deck. After a few minutes to disembark, we were soon making our way over several rolling hills (large ones) to the seaside town of Looe where we paused for a break and Jon and I enjoyed a white chocolate and raspberry ice cream (Cozza’s pecan and toffee equivalent losing out in the delicious stakes for once). In effect we enjoyed some time off in Looe (sorry!). Despite the lumpy terrain, we made really good progress after Looe, although the fast pace and some general fatigue was clearly causing some irritation at times. Nevertheless, we pushed on to St. Austell where the pace abated for a well earned lunch break of real Cornish pasties (plus iced Danish and a coke for me). With Jon’s knees starting to feel the strain after lunch, we dropped the pace a little and rode on, the increased proximity of Land’s End helping to lift everyone’s spirits. After a brief spell on the A30, which resulted in a puncture for Tom, we once again travelled on some lovely country lanes on the way to Penzance. The final 10 miles from Penzance to Land’s End were very pleasant and despite some initial steep climbs, the final five miles or so were a lovely ride. Finally, with cameras in action we reached our goal where we were treated to a beautiful sunset. After posing for photos we entered the Land’s End hotel and registered our names in the log book of all those people who have completed the same journey. As we were about to depart, we were met with a champagne reception by Jon’s sister (Kim), his mum, and Kim’s friend who had initially missed our arrival. It was great to have a proper celebration to commemorate our achievement and we took the time to pause for some more photos of the occasion before packing our bikes in our reception party’s cars and departing for our hotel in Penzance. A beautiful end to a fantastic, tough, and unforgettable journey. RAAM, here we come!
